The Artificial Intelligence Tool that can Detect Melanoma Image Credit: MIT A newly developed system could use neural networks to spot ugly duckling pre-cancerous lesions on a patient s skin, potentially detecting cancer more efficiently. Melanoma is a type of malignant tumor that is responsible for 70% of all skin cancer deaths. Of the 96,480 people diagnosed with melanoma in the US during 2019, reports indicate that 7230 passed away, making it the deadliest form of skin cancer. The key to preventing melanoma-related deaths is early identification. If doctors can spot the early cancer indicators of suspicious pigmented lesions (SPLs) quickly in primary-care settings, not only could this yield improved melanoma prognosis, but it could also result in a 20-fold reduction in treatment costs. ....
An artificial intelligence tool that can help detect melanoma April 5, 2021MIT Melanoma is a type of malignant tumor responsible for more than 70 percent of all skin cancer-related deaths worldwide. For years, physicians have relied on visual inspection to identify suspicious pigmented lesions (SPLs), which can be an indication of skin cancer. Such early-stage identification of SPLs in primary care settings can improve melanoma prognosis and significantly reduce treatment cost. The challenge is that quickly finding and prioritizing SPLs is difficult, due to the high volume of pigmented lesions that often need to be evaluated for potential biopsies. Now, researchers from MIT and elsewhere have devised a new artificial intelligence pipeline, using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and applying them to analyzing SPLs through the use of wide-field photography common in most smartphones and personal cameras. ....
New AI Tool can Detect Cancer with Smartphone Fizza AtiqueLast Updated: Apr 5, 2021 We all have lost our loved ones due to the deadly disease of cancer. While few are able to recover it, the main reason for late recovery or deadly situation is the late detection of cancer. Now scientists at MIT have created an AI tool that will help doctors to detect Melanoma. Melanoma is a deadly kind of skin tumor that can cause 70% of skin cancer-related deaths. Skin cancer is difficult to be detected. Doctors have to visually find pigment lesions and later on determines whether they are indications of skin cancers. This overall process is not just challenging but also consumes plenty of time.\ ....
