Residents in fear as stray dogs invade Lugazi Town

Residents in Lugazi Municipality, Buikwe District, are leaving in fear following the increasing number of stray dogs in the area.
Locals say the stray dogs move in a pack of 5-10 dogs and ask leaders to come to their rescue.
Mr Herman Mukasa, a boda -boda rider in Lugazi Municipality said ‘‘stray dogs have become a menace to the public because they keep loitering around the town.’’ ....

Vanilla farmers decry falling prices

Uganda has some of the best vanilla in the world and this puts it at a competitive advantage with the rest of the world’s producers.

The falling prices of vanilla have left farmers frustrated, with many afraid that they might not recover investment costs during the harvesting season, which commences next month.
The farmers say some buyers have already intimated that the prices may drop further, with a kilogramme of vanilla going for between Shs10,000 and Shs20,000, down from about Sh50,000 10 months ago. ....

Violence, irregularities mar mayoral elections

Acts of violence and other electoral irregularities were reported at various polling stations across the country as Ugandans elected division mayors and councillors.
As was the case with the recently-concluded mayoral and district chairperson elections, yesterday’s elections were also characterised by low voter turnout.

Elections cancelled in Mbale, Lugazi
In Mbale, drama ensued in Moni Ward in the Industrial Division when a fight broke out among supporters. Police used teargas to calm the situation.
Also, voting for women councillors at Nauyo Primary School Polling Station in Industrial Division was cancelled due to mismatch of symbols and names of candidates on the ballot papers. ....
