RALEIGH The North Carolina Department of Commerce Main Street & Rural Planning Center released a new digital tool on the organization’s website to give residents and visitors of North Carolina the ability to explore the state’s 66 “Main Street” communities. The tool, launched as a tourism-based economic development initiative, will be known as the NC Main to Main Trail, and is organized around each of the state’s eight prosperity zones. “Main Street communities are economic engines for North Carolina,” said North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders in a statement. “The new NC Main to Main Trail initiative is an additional opportunity to support the economic recovery of North Carolina’s rural communities and small businesses.” ....
Hendersonville business owner named NC 2020 Main Street Champion Hendersonville Times-News Michele Sparks, owner of Art Mob Studios & Marketplace in downtown Hendersonville, has been named a North Carolina 2020 Main Street Champion. Sparks was one of 38 volunteers recognized by the state s Main Street Program for their commitment to downtown revitalization and strong communities during a virtual recognition ceremony on March 11, according to a city news release. Sparks opened her business in 2011 as an outlet for artisans to sell their work. She began representing 25 artists and now represents 86 from across Western North Carolina. Sparks has been involved in every area of downtown, from volunteering with events like Rhythm & Brews to organizing the Art on Main festival and supporting the ArtScape outdoor art gallery program, the release states. ....
