American history and culture curator rex ellis. Good evening. My name is beth kelly. Im the Vice President of the Education Research and historical interpretation division. Its my honor to offer you a warm and personal welcome. The word welcome has a great deal of meaning for Colonial Williamsburg. We have been welcoming guests to come and learn about our 18th Century Community since 1932. 40 years ago, the foundation recognized we were only telling half of the story. And so, with determination and courage and perseverance, programming was designed by our panelists tonight so that we could tell the whole story of our 18th Century Community. Blending social history with public history to tell the African American story had never been done before, and quite literally, they were making history. This is the first of three panelists discussions we will have this year, and i would welcome you to come back on july 5th, where we will look at current programming that focuses on African American
