A U.S. airman based in Italy has died because of the coronavirus, family and friends say, which would mark the first active-duty death in the Air Force and the fourth such death among active-duty service members. Aviano Air Base is investigating what caused the death Tuesday of Tech. Sgt. Michael W. Morris, 36, an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter craftsman assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa said in a statement.

WASHINGTON An active-duty soldier in Virginia is the 15th service member to die from the coronavirus, the Pentagon announced Wednesday, almost a month after another soldier in Germany died from the disease. Sgt. 1st Class Lisa Maria Soto, 38, died Saturday at John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, Va., from complications related to the coronavirus, according to Jefferson Wolfe, a spokesman for U.S. Army Garrison Fort Lee.

An Army soldier has become the third active-duty U.S. service member to die from COVID-19.
Sgt. 1st Class Lisa Maria Soto, 38, an instructor with Alpha Company, 244th Quartermaster Battalion, at Fort Lee, Virginia, died Jan. 2 at a hospital in Hopewell, Virginia, not far from the base.
A 20-year veteran, Soto completed two combat deployments to Iraq in 2005 and Afghanistan in 2011 and spent time as an armorer with the 95th Police Battalion in Mannheim, Germany, in the early 2000s.
