SA should brace itself for a rough ride as it moves to level 4 lockdown and grapples with the fairly unknown and fast-spreading delta strain of Covid-19.
In his address last night, President Cyril Ramaphosa said they only knew about the presence of the delta variant on Friday after it was detected in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. Covid-19 has a had a tight hold on the country for the past few weeks, with Gauteng experiencing the worst of it, as it has been making up 60% of the country’s infections in the past week. ....

As rising infection numbers continue to spark fears of a third Covid wave, several sectors that operate on the basis of gatherings feel there has been little change in behavioural interventions needed to stave off another wave.
Churches, restaurants, the alcohol industry and the hospitality sector, which all operate on the basis of gatherings that could potentially contribute to the spread of the virus, said they were willing to assist the government’s efforts, to avoid total bans. But there appears to be no evidence of behavioural interventions they have put forward to mitigate this. ....

The ministerial advisory committee on Covid-19 has called for stricter restrictions on people coming into SA as the number of positive cases increase, sparking fears of a third wave and new variants.
Prof Koleka Mlisana, the chairperson of the ministerial advisory council, told Sowetan yesterday that it had already called for the tightening of regulations for people entering South Africa..
