By Lillian Young Capital News Service The Great Lakes region is no stranger to severe winter weather, but the Armistice Day Storm of 1940 went down as one of the most impactful weather events in Midwestern history. The storm occurred when a low pressure system rapidly moved into the Great Lakes region. Temperatures dropped from low 50s to single digits, according to a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Following the cold front, there was a deadly blizzard on Nov. 11, culminating in up to 26.6 inches of snow in some areas and causing gale-force winds on Lake Michigan. ....
Feb 6, 2021 Jeanne Marie Dunkle, 74, of Mill Hall passed away on Feb. 3, 2021 at UPMC. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy Wagner Sr. of Beech Creek. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Alvin Wagner Jr., and two sisters, Louise Council and Viginia Thompson. Jeanne was a 1965 graduate of Bald Eagle Nittany. She started her nursing career at Philipsburg State General Hospital where she graduated as a register nurse in 1968. Then she attended PSU where she earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1972. Then continued her education at Bloomsburg University where she earned her Master of Science in nursing and majored in adult health and illness/neuroscience in 1993. ....

Capital News Service From local restrictions on gathering sizes to gym closures, staying fit during the COVID-19 pandemic might seem a near-impossible task. Despite that, many communities in Michigan and elsewhere in the Great Lakes region have adapted existing physical fitness programs and implemented new ones. For example, given the limitations of indoor options, the San Francisco-based National Fitness Campaign has partnered with cities across the region to implement outdoor “fitness courts,” free outdoor gyms open all day every day. These gyms are on a cement area about the size of a basketball court, and offer the equipment and space needed for a full body workout. ....
