M1, 3 million LEC debt cripples courts

OPERATIONS at the Maseru Magistrate Court were this week paralysed after the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) abruptly cut power supplies due to the judiciary’s failure to pay a M1, 3 million power bill.
The utility company cut off supplies on Tuesday, leaving the Maseru Magistrate Court in darkness.
The situation is likely to go on for months as Chief Magistrate ‘Matankiso Nthunya said court administrators were unable to immediately raise the money to settle the debt.
Ms Nthunya told the 
Lesotho Times that the debt had been piling up over the past five years due to meagre funding allocated by the government to the judiciary. The court had now been forced to suspend cases whose proceedings needed to be recorded electronically. ....

Seleke bounces back, lands top LEC job

FORMER Lesotho National Development Authority (LNDC) chief executive officer CEO), Mohato Seleke, has been appointed as the new Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) managing director.
He replaces Leketekete Ketso who had been in charge albeit in an acting capacity.
Mr Seleke’s appointment is with effect from tomorrow. It marks an upturn in his fortunes as it comes barely two months after Trade and Industry Minister, Thabiso Molapo, refused to renew his contract at the LNDC. He had since filed a High Court application seeking the reversal of the minister’s decision. ....

TRC applauds ruling on Nteso killers

A LOCAL human rights body, the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC),  has applauded the High Court for jailing two police officers who murdered Lesotho Electricity Company auditor, Thibello Nteso.
The non-governmental organisation also hailed the police for conducting “effective investigations” into Mr Nteso’s 6 February 2017 murder. The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was also praised for its “effective prosecution” of the case which helped secure the police officers’ conviction and sentencing to 20 years each in prison.
The TRC however said despite the sterling work of the police and prosecution, the government still had a long way to go towards capacitating the judiciary to improve the criminal justice system. ....

MAFETENG – The Government of Lesotho together
with the People’s Republic of China launched the first ever Solar Power Station
project in the Kingdom of Lesotho, worth M1.1 billion.
The project will
run under the name, Ramarothole 70 Megawatt (MW). According to the Ministry of Energy
and Meteorology Principal Secretary (PS) Themba Sopeng, Ramarothole 70 Megawatt
(MW) solar project was conceptualized around 2015. He said it is the collaboration
between the government of Lesotho and the People’s Republic of China under what
is known as the cooperation agreement which is the forum on Africa Cooperation.
