the platform is packed as people try to catch a train out of the city. septa even offering refunds and credits to customers who bought those weekly and monthly regional rail passes. it s also asking commuters to try and change their schedules and their routines to ease the headaches many people felt this morning and are going to feel tonight. it s pretty bad. when i got on there was standing room only. i ve in zone three. so, um, i took really long time. reporter: crowded trains and long delays this morning for regional rail commuters. many not happy at all after septa had to take a third of its fleet out of service due to a defect on 95% of its silver line or five train cars. packed train, you know, flint right passed in you to the fourth quarter. really tough. people are annoyed. it was delayed just not moving at times. we were supposed to be on an express which takes 45 minutes and instead it took an hour and a half to get in to suburban station. reporter: ....

and now it s 14 minutes late already. reporter: she s one of tens of thousands of septa customers feeling the effects of major rail car defect. forcing the transit authority to pull 120 silver liner rail cars out of service. the result, a modified saturday train schedule causing crowding and confusion. it could be a little worse tomorrow. reporter: just as septa officials were bearing the bad news, some of those defective rail cars were being brought in to septa rail yards to be inspected. engineers are still trying to get a handle on what caused fatigue cracks on weight bearing undercarriage beams on a third of septa s rail car fleet. so just how long will these delays last? let s just say it may be a long summer. it s still very tough to gauge as far as how long things are going to take. reporter: back at suburban station, the platforms were packed. the trains were running behind schedule. i boarded the paoli thorndale local to see first hand what the commut ....
