A 'beautiful' friendship: Two families connected by Crown Heights tragedy maintain special bond 30 years later

Usually on the anniversary of the Crown Heights riots, Carmel Cato reflects on the too-short life of his son, Gavin, a 7-year-old Black boy whose death under the wheels of an out-of-control car 30 years ago sparked three days of violence. Killed, too, that night was Yankel Rosenbaum, 29, a rabbinical student from Australia stabbed to death in the violent aftermath for only one reason he was Jewish, like the man behind the wheel of the car that killed the boy. Today, the Cato and Rosenbaum families are working to maintain their special bond after the death last year of Yankel Rosenbaum's brother. ....

Crown Heights Killer Lemrick Nelson Remains a Free Man - Washington Free Beacon

Lemrick Nelson, the black man who murdered 29-year-old Jewish doctoral student Yankel Rosenbaum during the 1991 Crown Heights riots, isn’t easy to find. His name last appeared in the New York press in December 2014, after police found him passed out in a parked car with an open bottle of scotch. Nelson had said he cleaned up his alcohol use, which was blamed for Rosenbaum's death. His murder of Rosenbaum, Nelson said in a 2003 trial, was just a mistake, if not the consequence of his crippling disease. ....

Derek Chauvin's Double Jeopardy

Derek Chauvin’s Double Jeopardy
Editorial of The New York Sun |

Why is the federal government bringing a criminal civil rights charge against Derek Chauvin? The key charges a federal grand jury handed up are for the same offense — killing George Floyd by pressing a knee on his neck — on which Chauvin has already been convicted by Minnesota. He already faces a long stretch. Why isn’t the new indictment a violation of the Constitution’s double jeopardy clause?
We don’t want to be misunderstood here. We’re not disputing the finding, by a jury of Minnesota citizens, that Chauvin is guilty of second degree murder and other charges. Nor are we commenting on the challenges to that verdict on other grounds, such as protests — and a comment by President Biden — that might have cowed the jury. We have already issued our editorial reckoning that a finding of guilty seemed reasona ....
