A beautiful friendship: Two families connected by Crown Heights tragedy maintain special bond 30 years later

Usually on the anniversary of the Crown Heights riots, Carmel Cato reflects on the too-short life of his son, Gavin, a 7-year-old Black boy whose death under the wheels of an out-of-control car 30 years ago sparked three days of violence. Killed, too, that night was Yankel Rosenbaum, 29, a rabbinical student from Australia stabbed to death in the violent aftermath for only one reason he was Jewish, like the man behind the wheel of the car that killed the boy. Today, the Cato and Rosenbaum families are working to maintain their special bond after the death last year of Yankel Rosenbaum's brother.

Rabbiner Yoel Kahn verstorben Das «lebende Archiv» der Lubawitsch-Bewegung wurde 91 Jahre alt. Mit Rabbiner Yoel Kahn ist am 15. Juli eine wichtige Persönlichkeit der Lubawitsch-Bewegung aus dem Leben geschieden. Er verstarb an den Folgen eines Herzinfarktes in einem Spital. Kahn wurde 1930 in Moskau als Sohn einer chassidischen Familie geboren. Der Vater hatte den Glauben im Untergrund mit anderen Aktivisten am Leben gehalten und verbrachte deshalb einige Jahre in den Gulags Stalins. 1935 konnte die Familie nach Palästina fliehen, traf unterwegs in Wien jedoch auf den damaligen Lubawitscher Rebbe Yosef Schneersohn und dessen Schwiegersohn und Nachfolger Menachem Schneerson. Aus der Begegnung wurde eine lebenslange Bindung. Der junge Yoel trat in Palästina in eine Yeshiva der Lubawitscher ein und erwies sich als klug, fleissig und von einem erstaunlichen Erinnerungsvermögen gesegnet.

The House passed HB 529 last month on a 94-24 vote, and a similar bill is making its way through the Senate. In the House, the 24 opponents included 23 Democrats plus Republican Rep. Linda Chaney of St. Petersburg. Under the proposal, which would cover all K-12 public school classrooms, teachers can not recommend what students do with that time but should encourage parents to have that conversation with their children.
