Mohalenyane Phakela FIVE murder-accused soldiers accused of killing three Mafeteng civilians in 2012, on Friday came up with another bizarre argument as they continued with their war of attrition aimed at frustrating their trial. During their court appearance, the five who have already rejected a pro deo (state-sponsored) lawyer, pleaded with Botswana Judge Onkemetse Tshosa to postpone their trial to April 2021 to give them time to save money to hire lawyers of their choice. They argued that they had run out of money as they had prioritised buying their children clothes and other Christmas gifts over paying for legal representation. ....
M1, 3 million LEC debt cripples courts Mohalenyane Phakela OPERATIONS at the Maseru Magistrate Court were this week paralysed after the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) abruptly cut power supplies due to the judiciary’s failure to pay a M1, 3 million power bill. The utility company cut off supplies on Tuesday, leaving the Maseru Magistrate Court in darkness. The situation is likely to go on for months as Chief Magistrate ‘Matankiso Nthunya said court administrators were unable to immediately raise the money to settle the debt. Ms Nthunya told the Lesotho Times that the debt had been piling up over the past five years due to meagre funding allocated by the government to the judiciary. The court had now been forced to suspend cases whose proceedings needed to be recorded electronically. ....
IEC commissioners sworn-in, get down to business Pascalinah Kabi NEWLY appointed Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairperson Mphasa Mokhochane and his fellow commissioners say they are raring to go after their swearing-in this week. Mr Mokhochane said their urgent tasks included appointing a new director of elections, holding by elections in constituencies whose members of parliament have died as well as cleaning up the voters’ roll and delineating electoral constituencies ahead of the 2022 elections. The office of director of elections has been vacant since the July 2020 expiry of the contract of former occupant, Letholetseng Ntsike. Mr Mokhochane and fellow commissioners, Dr Karabo Mokobocho and Mr Tšoeu Petlane, were appointed last month by King Letsie III on the advice of the Council of State. ....
