Usoro meets Olympics qualifying standard at Texas event

Ruth Usoro continued her impressive season Friday evening when she leapt 6.82m to win the The Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship, which took place at the Sports Performance Center, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.
Her performance met the 6.82m qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympics for the women’s long jump event.
It’s also the second-farthest this year and the meet and school’s records.
Tara Davis finished second, jumping 6.68m, while Monae Nichols placed thirdrd with a jump of 6.46m.
The PUNCH had reported that Usoro broke the national record in the women’s triple jump event at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in January. ....

At last, FG reopens Third Mainland Bridge

After over seven-month closure, the Federal Government, on Saturday, fully reopened the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had announced the closure of the bridge on July 24, 2020 for repair works to be carried out on it but the government on Saturday reopened the bridge which spans over 11.8km.
During the closure, commuters went through hard times connecting the Mainland and the Island areas of Nigeria’s economic capital as they navigated other alternative routes. The bridge alongside the Carter Bridge and Eko Bridge connect Victoria Island to the mainland. The Third Mainland Bridge is also reported to be the busiest in Nigeria. ....

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday, welcomed the release of those abducted from the Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘President Buhari welcomes release of Kagara abducted students’.
It read, “President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday welcomed the release of the abducted students of Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State.
“The President commended the nation’s security and intelligence agencies and the government of Niger State for their responses in securing the release.
