The uproar was vicious. Everyone who was anyone in athletics had an opinion on ‘The List’. There were accusations of bias, nepotism, favoritism, God-fatherism and outright ineptitude. The bitterness was palpable across the oceans and from the beaches of California to the deserts of Abu Dhabi. Nigerian athletes cried “FOUL”. This was the reaction to some names on list of people the Federal Ministry of Sports had released to benefit from the Covid-19 relief fund and also the “Adopt-an-Athlete” Programme. One name in particular, caused the rippling agitation: Ruth Usoro.

Ruth Usoro continued her impressive season Friday evening when she leapt 6.82m to win the The Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship, which took place at the Sports Performance Center, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.
Her performance met the 6.82m qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympics for the women’s long jump event.
It’s also the second-farthest this year and the meet and school’s records.
Tara Davis finished second, jumping 6.68m, while Monae Nichols placed thirdrd with a jump of 6.46m.
The PUNCH had reported that Usoro broke the national record in the women’s triple jump event at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in January. ....

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has hailed athlete, Ruth Usoro, after she set a new Nigerian record in triple jump on Saturday in the US.
The athletics body said Usoro’s feat was a sign that Nigeria had bright prospects at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Usoro leapt a distance of 14.28m in her first attempt at the Texas Tech Corky Classic to set the new Nigerian record.
She erased the 14.21m record set by Chinonye Ohadugha at the 2007 African Games in Algiers, Algeria.
AFN Technical Director, Sunday Adeleye, said the 23-year-old had always shown signs of achieving greatness. ....

Ruth Usoro broke the national record in the women’s triple jump event at the Texas Tech Corky Classic on Saturday.
The 23-year-old leapt a distance of 14.28m in her first attempt to set the new Nigerian record.
She broke the 14.21m record set by Chinonye Ohadugha at the 2007 African Games in Algiers, Algeria.
The jump ensured she won the event ahead of Sophia Falco and Ella Anttila, who leapt 12.91m and 12.89m respectively.
The distance was also the joint world lead in the triple jump this year.
It was also the second-farthest distance in NCAA history, behind Georgia’s Keturah Orji, who leapt 14.53m in 2018. ....
