Rages on. this is the same wildfire that killed three firefighters wednesday. 31-year-old richard wheeler, 21-year-old andrew zajac, and tom zbyszewski, just 20. he loved life and he loved people. he wanted to help people. he was a special kid, you know. we re really going to miss tom. right now, little relief in sight for the dozens of wildfires that are burning across parts of the western united states. you can take a look there at the map. all of those flames there, as you can see, are all those wildfires burning right now. following the fire fight in washington, msnbc s leann greg. first of all, what are the conditions like right now, and how are those conditions expected to affect the fire fight this weekend? reporter: well, craig, extreme fire behavior is expected again today because of the strong wind you were talking ....

Thank you very much. and winter here has not officially begun yet, but it sure looks like it. a monster storm across the united states impacting tens of millions of people. joining me from a snowy denver, colorado, nbc s leann greg. beautiful sight, but it s not that easy to get around. there were other impacts, including on the crops in california, the orange groves. what is the trajectory now of the storm? that s right, andrea. well, right now it is 8 degrees here in denver. those temperatures will plummet to subzero later this afternoon. the snow is continuing to fall. that s expected to diminish, but the temperatures won t get out of the teens until later this weekend. to the west of us in the mountains, it is a snow event, possibly up to two feet of snow, but really the story is about the frigid cold temperatures. dangerously cold. yesterday it was close to 50 ....

here s what the ncaa came up with. penn state has to pay a $60 million fine, which equals the amount of money generated annually by the football program. there will be a four-year ban on bowl games and any post-season competitions as well. there will be a reduction in sports scholarships from 25 to 15 for the next four years. the university will be stripped of all wins from 1998 through 2011. officials say that start date marks the date of the first infraction. the university will be on probation with the ncaa for the next five years, and the ncaa reserves the right to investigate individuals affiliated with the program and possibly levy additional sanctions after all criminal proceedings are complete. this historic penalty is brought by the ncaa followed former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky s conviction on 45 charges of child sex abuse. much of that abuse happened on the penn state campus and was not a secret to many, including head coach joe paterno, accor ....

three people from our area survived. that plane went down in alaska last night in a remote area that was very difficult for rescuers to reach. of the nine people on board, only four survived. one of those killed was the longtime senator ted stevens. a man with many friends in washington and throughout the country. reporter: tonight, people in alaska and across the nation are mourning the loss of 86-year-old former u.s. senator ted stevens. the longest-serving republican in history. in his home state, a beloved political figure during his 40 years in the senate. this seemed larger than life. anybody who knew him knew him that way, for he built alaska and he stood for alaska and he fault for alaskans. reporter: stevens and fourer others were killed when their small plane crashed in a remote area near dillingham, alaska. four survived, including former nasa administrator sean o keefe and his teenaged son kevin. both suffered severe injuries. others on board included ....
