Kenya: Maize shortage to cause price rise over importation ban from Tanzania, Uganda

The Cereal Millers Association (CMA) in Kenya on Monday revealed that the prices of maize in the county are set to rise over ban on maize importation from Tanzania and Uganda, according to a report by Kahawa Tungu.
The association said that the unclarity in respect to the recent maize ban from Tanzania and Uganda would cause a rise in prices due to maize shortage in the county. It apprehended the ban as it said, the CMA welcomes the ban on maize that contains aflatoxin levels above the 10 parts per billion (ppb) threshold but is requesting the government to allow maize that does not breach this level be allowed to avoid a grain shortage . ....

Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) officials have started taking samples of Ugandan maize to test for traces of aflatoxins following the ban of the cereal in the Kenyan market. 
The team arrived in Busia border District on Saturday and embarked on collecting maize samples from all stores for testing in their laboratory in Kampala, with results expected today.
“We are a big team from UNBS picking maize samples from all stores to test for levels of aflatoxins,” one of the officials, who declined to be named, said. ....

Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde yesterday told Daily Monitor, Kenya had not officially communicated in regard to the ban that had been announced last week .

Kenya: Govt lifts ban on corn importation from Tanzania and Uganda


(Ecofin Agency) - Few days after it imposed an embargo on maize imports from Tanzania and Uganda, the Kenyan government announced today it has lifted the ban. Resumption is however subject to better and stricter compliance with phytosanitary requirements.
According to Peter Munya, Minister of Agriculture, maize exporters to Kenya will now have to register with the relevant authorities and provide certificates of origin for clearance of their goods at border checkpoints. They will also be required to present a certificate of compliance with standards on aflatoxin limits; a mycotoxin that is known to cause cancer, whose high levels in shipments led the authorities to suspend imports from the sub-region last March 5. ....
