Kenya: Govt lifts ban on corn importation from Tanzania and Uganda

(Ecofin Agency) - Few days after it imposed an embargo on maize imports from Tanzania and Uganda, the Kenyan government announced today it has lifted the ban. Resumption is however subject to better and stricter compliance with phytosanitary requirements.
According to Peter Munya, Minister of Agriculture, maize exporters to Kenya will now have to register with the relevant authorities and provide certificates of origin for clearance of their goods at border checkpoints. They will also be required to present a certificate of compliance with standards on aflatoxin limits; a mycotoxin that is known to cause cancer, whose high levels in shipments led the authorities to suspend imports from the sub-region last March 5. ....

Embu muguka farmers to receive Sh53m funding

The government has set aside Sh53 million to boost muguka farming in Embu County.
The funds will be advanced to the small-scale farmers in Mbeere North and South sub-counties as soft loans at an interest rate of three per cent for purchase farm inputs to increase production.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary, Anne Nyaga, the money will be released to the farmers through their saccos in three weeks’ time.
Speaking on Tuesday at Muraru village during the official opening of a Sh5.6 million muguka market constructed by the government, Ms Nyaga said muguka played a key role in improving the livelihoods of farmers. ....
