Hirono yesterday. what are the plans if the lava gets too close? talking to the state department of transportation, highway folks. they need their period about six hours to shut down the highway to affect their operations. u.s.g.s. volcano observatory said they can give 24 to 48 hours of notice but as far as mitigation to the use of that highway we do have two other routes which service the island long before the highway was improved so those were the main routes around the island so folks would have to resort back to that. they are state highways, federally funded highways so they re adequate for the traffic ....

Largest volcano, the world s largest active one at that, and to take it in is spectacular but one to keep a safe distance from. and they re monitoring closely the flow of that lava because it s going now at a much slower pace than certainly initially about 25 feet per hour according to the governor here. and it s making its way this direction. here is another concerning part, what s on the other side of this side street, a main highway that cuts from one end of the big island to the other. you cut that off transportation wise you re going to have a lot of issues. until that point, though, they re saying come on out. they re letting people park along this side street here that s been turned into a one-way roadway so that people can safely pull over, take in the sites, make offerings. this is a culturally significant ....

Spreading, so it s difficult whether it will reach the highway. however, in the latest update that came yesterday morning from the u.s. geological survey, they thought that it might be as much as a week away. okay. so lava a week away and moving slowly, but the air and ash are potentially more dangerous. so take us through what makes that such a hazard for people. so, tissue volcanos emit materials in a variety of ways, three primary ways being volcanic gases, volcanic gas or articulates in the atmosphere as well as lava flows. and so of those three types of materials, the volcanic gas output from mauna loa volcano is rather substantial. if you ve seen any of the footage or bluish white particulate in the atmosphere, it looks like smoke. it s actually sulfur die ox it. it s acidic gas, a respiratory ....

The lava. the gentleman who talked about bringing the leis as an offering, where would he have put them? everything on the island is so interconnected. it s really up to that person and their own tradition. certainly we re in a time with a population of over 200,000 on hawaii island, regular visitation by many more visitors, management of crowds and keeping them safe, at a safe distance from lava is important. i want to give credit to the county of hawaii, civil defense and all the teams helping them, to maintain the balance between access, proximity to view but also maintaining public safety. and so people will want to get as close as possible and we thank everybody for being mindful and respectful of some of the barriers and boundaries ....
