now, it looks maybe six, seven deep, where a lot of mud has slid down this ravine toward the ocean. there s tree stunts, there s trees in the way, slid down cypress trees it looks like, a couple of them have slid down the hill, they have got it taped off with yellow tape and i m told that because the park service is short staffed today and tomorrow and this week, this probably will not be addressed until some time next week, but in the meantime, the coastal path is still open. this is just a few yards from uss san francisco memorial out here at lands end. and you can see folks walking by and taking a look and pretty significant slump. right now, nobody working on it and i think it will probably be next week before we see any movement. mark, we can see. from the chopper shot, it looks like the trail there is still open. can you tell, looks like the public walking on by, do you know if they are going to expand the taped off area because that mudslide with our grounds ....
been marching almost every night since brown was killed. today much of the country waits to hear what s next. jay gray, nbc news, clayton, missouri. police in our region are preparing for possible protests after tonight s announcement. our team coverage continues with jackie bensen. she is at the white house with more on the call for calm. jackie? reporter: well, doreen, down in front of the white house, things appear as usual. we have some video that we shot just a short time ago. there may be a few more police officers, but plenty of tourists down there, and as i said, just things as usual down there right now. now this is a city that is used to being able to deal with large-scale protests. so many of the preparations being made are not the type you can see. news4 has learned a few things about the preparation. among them, d.c. police leave has been restricted by order of the police chief, and civil disturbance units have been activated in addition, of course, to ....
reporter: we re on river w headed away from the district. you re going to see a variety of conditions out here. we re looking at a couple of cars who probably prudently just gave up last night or earlier this morning. they are on the side of the road. that s something you have to watch out for. another thing is intersections. you have snow that s been pushed out on a street, maybe clearing a secondary street and you get those piles in the intersections on the main road that may have been cleared. you re going to come across that. it s a matter of slush. you move through it well. but just like when we had the snow on the ground stopping can be a challenge. that is indeed going to be the challenge for folks. i ve seen a couple of accidents on my way in. nothing major, but people who simply had run off the road ended up in the median among the trees and things like that. not a place you want to be. you can get into a false sense of security because you do see pavement so ....
we re failing to get these perpetrators into the criminal justice system and what we need to do to improve our abysmal record in that regard. i thank all of you for being here. you were all invited because you are experts in various ways on this issue. and this is not a hearing. this is a conversation. the goal here, and i want to say for senator gillibrand and senator blumenthal, they are both very sorry they cannot be here today. i m sure they ll be participating in the other roundtables we will have. we re working on drafting legislation. and what we want to do is maybe simplify because i know this is now a complex labyrinth of different rules between save and cleary and title 9 and different standards of proof, different state statutes. we don t even agree on the definition of consent. so those are challenges that i know this area represents and we want to see if we can simplify, clarify, augment, support, perhaps provide more mandatory training but with the grants ....
