After a flurry of controversy, the SSC Tuatara was declared the world’s fastest production car a few months ago, a second much more thoroughly verified run securing the title. Unfortunately, that vehicle was recently damaged on its way to a third record attempt.

The Drive, in April, the vehicle was in a transport trailer on the way to Utah for another attempt to break through the 300-mph (483-km/h) threshold and reach the Tuatara’s estimated top speed, 331 mph (532 km/h).

However, while that record of an average top speed of 282.9 mph is a highly impressive achievement, it remains a little short of SSC s true goal: to go faster than 300 mph. Uh-oh, this won’t buff out easily. The only completed example of the SSC Tuatara hypercar, the one that was used to set the world record for the fastest production car, has been damaged in what you might call a freak accident.

The Drive has learned that SSC Tuatara #001, owned by Larry Caplin, was damaged when the carrier flipped in high winds. The accident happened on April 17 in Brigham City, Utah, as the car was making its way to Florida, for another record attempt. Despite warnings from authorities that high profile vehicles should not travel that night due to high winds, the carrier set off for its destination. ....
