With the Tuatara’s original top speed attempt tarnished by controversy, SSC North America had no other way but to redo the run. In an attempt to clear up any accusations about tampering with the video footage of the original run that took place last October, the hypercar marque now claims it has legitimately set a new top speed record during a second official run.
Rather than going back to the Nevada State Route 160 where the first attempt took place, SSC gained access to the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at Space Florida s Shuttle Landing Facility. SSC Tuatara achieves 282.9mph average, faster than Koenigsegg's Agera RS

The SSC Ultimate Aero was the American hypercar that briefly stole the title of world’s fastest production car from the Bugatti Veyron in 2007, and now its successor has allegedly done the same. Following the intense controversy surrounding the legitimacy of last year’s claimed 331mph run, a second round of testing earlier this month saw the Tuatara achieve a two-way average of 282.9mph.
The attempt took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a 2.3-mile stretch of tarmac, and unlike the first attempt, the Tuatara was fitted with telemetry equipment from four different suppliers to ensure accuracy. As with most top speed runs, a two-way average is required to negate the effects of variables such as wind and surface inconsistencies, so although a peak speed of 286.1mph was recorded, the following 279.7mph run made for a two-way average of 282.9mph. ....

SSC Sets Production Car Speed Record, Still Misses 300 MPH Mark

SSC has made yet another attempt to set a new speed record with the Tuatara, and this time they did it, posting an official speed of 282.9 mph (455.3 km/h), averaged over two runs in opposite directions.
That’s enough for the 1,750 hp hypercar built by Jerod Shelby’s company to beat the previous record of 277.87 mph (447.2 km/h) set by Koenigsegg in 2017.
In order to make sure no one could dispute the outcome, SCC brought along every speed measuring device they could think of. “We had Racelogic there with their VBOX equipment, we had Life Racing, we had Garmin, and we had IMRA, which is the International Mile Racing [Association],” Shelby told Car and Driver. ....

SSC has beaten the world record for world’s fastest production car with its Tuatara for real this time.
The Tuatara hit a blistering 279.7 mph (450.1 km/h) on its northbound run at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds at the Kennedy Space Center; and 286.1 mph (460.4 km/h) on its southbound run, with both runs being completed within an hour of each other.
The average of the two numbers is 282.9 mph (455.3 km/h), which is good enough to break the previous record of 277.87 mph (447.2 km/h) set by Koenigsegg in 2017. Video of the run was shared by Driven Plus on YouTube, and this verified by several witnesses in several ways. ....
