CSPAN Campaign 2020 New York 14th Congressional Debate July 12, 2024

Reform as well as several nights of unrest that involved looting. As we cover these events, we are keeping our eye on the upcoming primary that falls on june 23 for many states, including for congress, for state senate, assembly. The people elected to these offices are grappling with serious issues here and all around the country. Tonight, were holding a democratic primary debate for new yorks 14th congressional district, which covers part of queens and the bronx. As you can see on the map, this stretches across several neighborhoods including a story a, jackson heights. The seat is currently held by alexandria ocasiocortez we also she joins us tonight. I wanted to speak to say that given the state law and given whats already in your handbook, no policy changes are needed for you to be a very supportive group to student strikes. Within the handbook it already says it can be a justifiable personal reason. The school board previously read that and said that students have to go with their parents. If parents have to decide to say that my parent is sick, thats not equitable. Not all parents have the same ability to figure that out. I know that there were more privileged students whose parents were able to excuse them. More most students felt that they were intimidated and not able to go.
