RIKUZENTAKATA, Iwate Young pine trees are growing again along this city s coastline thanks to efforts to restore the famed pine groves swept away by tsunami triggered in the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Before the quake, the about 2-kilometer-long stretch of beach was lush with some 70,000 pine trees, and it was a popular spot for beachgoers that even became designated a place of scenic beauty by the national government. ....

TOKYO Amid findings that U.S. military helicopters have been repeatedly flying in central Tokyo at low altitudes that would be illegal for Japanese aircraft, the Mainichi Shimbun confirmed 21 instances of U.S. choppers departing and landing in areas near a university which are outside the designated space at a heliport in the Roppongi area. ....

SAGAMIHARA, Kanagawa The Hayabusa2 reentry capsule that delivered samples from the asteroid Ryugu to Earth last year went on public display for the first time on March 12 at Sagamihara City Museum in this east Japan city s Chuo Ward.
The capsule separated from Hayabusa2 last December and landed in a desert in southern Australia. It contained 5.4 grams of soil samples taken from the asteroid when the probe touched down twice. ....

Japan gives environment minister new role to lead climate change talks

TOKYO (Kyodo) Japan on Tuesday gave Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi a new role as minister in charge of climate change as the country seeks to take the lead in upcoming international conferences on the global issue.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has instructed Koizumi to work with other ministers and prepare for a U.N. conference on climate change to be held in Britain in November.
Japan must proactively contribute to decarbonizing the world and lead international discussions, said Kato. The new assignment is for representing Japan in upcoming events and not a permanent post, he added. ....
