The OU Student Government Association released a statement after the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed House Bill 1775, urging Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt to veto the bill. HB 1775 was originally written as a bill regarding emergency medical situations during high school sporting events. The bill was entirely rewritten into a bill that implements restrictions on certain gender and diversity theories being taught in schools and could hurt the OU community, according to the statement signed by Tavana Farzaneh, SGA president; Crispin South, chair of the Undergraduate Student Congress; Claire Burch, chair of the Graduate Student Senate; and Kobe Chen, chair of Campus Activities Council. ....
In March 2020, unlucky Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation when the overhead speakers at Evergreen High School announced cancelations to upcoming athletic events and an extended Spring Break due to a mysterious illness spreading throughout the country. Soon-to-be valedictorian Carson Poupore sat in English class during the announcement, which caused the classroom to go âhaywire.â Poupore was oblivious to what was to come due to the unprecedented outbreak. The following August, he enrolled in OU to experience an âunforgettableâ freshman year with virtual learning, socially distanced classrooms and masked faces. The Student Government Association Undergraduate Student Congress passed two bills relating to student organizationsâ funding that generated debate on the amount of funding multicultural organizations received, and they nominated members for numerous administrative positions Tuesday. Budget Committee Chair Lauren Patton presented a bill appropriating SGA funds to governmental student organizations at OU, including Campus Activities Council, SGA Undergraduate Student Congress, SGA Graduate Student Senate, the SGA Executive Branch and Student Bar Association. Some congress members questioned why CAC received an increase in funding this year. Patton explained CAC had âunfairlyâ received a cut last year due to budget restrictions. âWe were able to work with them â they knew (they would be) going into primary (funding)Â last year and supplemented during auxiliary (funding) at the beginning of this year, but we wanted to return them more to what th ....
