Glamour, the lifestyle that the world has come to know. it very interesting to say people were more subdued because this time of year would be the day that most of us would be seeing image of dubai in spectacular fashion. literally you couldn t see the from my vantage point here at burj in downtown, you couldn t see to the top because the smoke from the fire covered the burj khalifa the very top. it s bizarre because anywhere else you are in the world you always see the entire burj. but here so close you couldn t see the whole thing lit up because of the smoke at the top of burj khalifa. that gives you some sense of the juxtaposition. you have the clock strike midnight and the fire raging and ....
i did feel safe because i am about 200 to 300 yards away from both. the fire looked contained in that area although it was raging when the clock struck midnight. it looks like it more contained now. but getting, i think, to a larger point which your guests have said, which you have alluded to, it s just surreal and almost poor form when there s a fire raging and people are running away from it go ahead with the fireworks display, even while it is new year s eve, i had many guests here at my apartment and they didn t feel right. they just sort of bowed their heads and didn t want to take pictures because it didn t feel right. dubai s a country where the united arab emirates is a country, but dubai is a city that celebratesite image, ....
So it s very labor intensive, very difficult, very dangerous, and they re going to need a great deal of help, which is why i find it amazing that the fireworks i see on the right-hand of your screen right now is just amazing to me that they re doing that. your previous caller, i agree with her, it s got a lot to do about the current economic issues in dubai, in the uae where they are having problems getting people to move there. much of the population there, you have to remember, are expats, people from other countries that go there to work and live. bobby, to that point that you bring up about the civil defense forces, their manpower, made up of mostly united arab emirates nationals or not? and how does that not. how may that affect their response to this? would it have an effect in terms of their training, their skill set, in terms of communication ....
And the embers from a structure lit multiple buildings in memphis on fire because large embers were flying through the sky and it was a windy night. some of the shots of the hotel, you see the smoke all going one way. because there s light winds. it s 63 stories tall. you re exactly right, the emergency goes beyond the hotel quite far. and also dubai with the fireworks, i think everything chief dunn says is spot-on and he knows what he s talking about. he s an expert in fire fighting, but i do just disagree with him on this one point. i don t think the city should have gone on with the fireworks display. we don t know if this is an act of terrorism. it would be an accident, someone using fireworks on the 20th floor where the first fire was observed. it could have been any kind of ignition, accidental, anything could have started it. i think that s really important to distinguish. in our business we use a couple of sort of algorithms to assess ....
Of people there in the streets. again, on the left side of the screen we re now seeing pictures of people who were able to escape that massive hotel fire as the fireworks continue. a lot of the discussion happening online is about whether or not these fireworks should have gone forward at all, whether or not this should have taken place. many people in dubai saying that just that horrifyingly frightening image of a 63-story building on fire and the danger there of the debris falling. and you see that in your screen, on your screen right now. the debris falling from this hotel has been landing amongst the residential and commercial buildings in that neighborhood. and that s one of the concerns that people on the ground have. cal perry, thanks for that update. let s widen this discussion a little bit. before we do that we ll put up this image for you. this will give you a comparison, really, a side by side comparison of the address hotel. this was posted on instagram a ....
