Four adults and a 9-month-old infant are stuck in a boat, teetering over the edge of the dam, the river ravaging below. that was the most strangest position i ve ever seen. i knew that bow sticking up in the air like that was going to be an extreme hazard for us. it started as a fun day. kim and kirk medders and their 9-month-old baby elias along with two neighbors are taking a leisurely boat ride in indianapolis. they re calmly moving along when suddenly the boat s motor stops. without power, they drift down stream, ramming into a log just yards away from the dam s water. it pushes the boat back, and that s how they wound up here perched atop the dam with an underwater whirlpool swirling below. instinctually, nobody moves. i m asking you to spot in case they go down, you clear? ....
they rope off the lower section of the river in case any of the boaters go over. nearly an hour has gone by. kim and kirk remain calm but they re seriously concerned their son, who hit his head when the boat came to a stop. we didn t know if he had a concussion, if there was swelling of his brain, just a lot of concern. after nearly two hours, a helicopter team arrives. pilot john kelly and his partner sergeant chip sunje see the boat and know immediately this is going to be a mission unlike anything they have encountered. i m thinking, we have never dropped a sling down to someone who had a child. we never planned for that. the rescuers have to hover as close as they can to the boat. sergeant sunje has to dangle over the edge to reach out and grab the baby, but if they hover too low the downdraft from the row or the blades or a nudge from the helicopter skids could topple the boat over dumping the boaters into the river. ....
