electrical fires and power outages are adding to the misery in the eastern united states. to give you an idea of how massive sandy still is, fierce winds are blowing in from canada all the way to georgea. this morning, some 7 million homes and businesses are without power and heat. sandy is also whipping up huge amounts of snow from maryland to tennessee and west virginia, a blizzard could dump three feet of rare october snow. our reporters are at some of the worst points of the super storm and breaking down the details on how all americans could feel sandy s impact. right now, we re following rescues and evacuations under way in much of the region. in northern new jersey there s been a breach in a berm and several communities are now flooded. one police chief says there s up to five feet of water in the streets of moonachie and little ferry. and in carlstadt rescues are taking place. having trouble getting to the scene because the roadways are so bad. when she arrives ....

a white capped rush of water took over the streets of ocean city, new jersey, after hurricane sandy made landfall at 8:00 last night. the governor is calling the damage there unprecedented. so far 29 people have died here in the united states. 29. and dozens of survivors today feared what would happen if rescuers had not shown up in time. we tried to stop it. we put towels down, we had the sandbags down. it was rushing in. it was rushing in from the windows, the doorways, everywhere. we lost everything. i came all the way from the top of the house. where were you at that time? downstairs trying to save them and i couldn t do anything about it. just kept on pouring in. it was coming all over the place, under the windows, from the sides. so many people in the storm s path have never experienced anything like this. we have more than 8 million people in this city, nearly half a million customers with no power today. that is challenge number one. challenge number t ....

today. right now the storm is over pennsylvania. torrential rain and in some places, blizzard conditions. here is the big picture as best we know it. 67 in the caribbean. close to 8 million customers in 15 states and the district of columbia have no electricity. spent last night in red cross operated shelters. this may be the worst storm ever to hit new york city. one of the biggest challenges is where the massive subway system is shut down, tunnels and stations are filled with high water. no idea when the trains will be running again. this is a difficult situation. take a look at laguardia airport. the runways are submerged and levels were so high they reached the jet lanes where people usually walk on to the planes. an entire neighborhood is destroyed by fire. at least 80 homes burned to the ground in the new york burro of queens. this is an awful image. people are going through hell right now. tell us about it. you know, they really are. about 80 homes, the fir ....

sandy. when we all opened our eyes this morning after experiencing first-hand the unrelenting power of last night s record-breaking hurricane, the more than light revealed unimaginable destruction in sandy s wake. make no mistake about it. this was a devastating storm, maybe the worst that we have ever experienced. the level of devastation at the jersey shore is unthinkable. the death toll tonight, at least 30 people have died across eight states. nearly 8 million people in the northeast and the mid atlantic are without power tonight, and the estimated costs of the storm, and it s only fair to say, this is only preliminary, given that the destruction is still being evaluated. right now we re already looking at as much as $20 billion, and that is only for lost business and property damage. the destruction is not over, because look at this picture. this is new jersey. floodwaters have turned neighborhoods into islands there. for many people, the only way out is by b ....
