Kingston Police have put out a call for donations to keep their mounted unit in the saddle.
The role of police horse Murney and her rider, Const. Sarah Groenewegen, with the force first came into question at the end of 2019 when the Kingston Police Services Board decided to cut the position in order to hire 10 new officers.

New efforts are being developed to keep Kingston Police’s mounted unit on the beat, after the COVID-19 pandemic squashed community fundraising efforts.
“(Const.) Sarah (Groenewegen) and Murney are much more than an ambassador for the Kingston Police, as they also perform enforcement duties and are present in areas that require extra patrol such as downtown, the K&P Trail, the waterfront, the University District and protests,” Chief Antje McNeely told the Kingston Police Services Board on Thursday.
