the family of daunte wright when the sentence was announced kim potter murdered my son, and he died april 11th today the justice system murdered him all over again. that was reaction at the time of the sentence being announced. we haven t seen any updated reaction from the family yet we re obviously watching for that officials were also watching for the possibility of protests. they said specifically they were worried about the possibility of violent protests upon potter s release. they did this under the cover of darkness they kept it secret of when she was going to be released because of concerns for potter s safety as well as the safety of others at the prison facility we were told she was released at 4:00 a.m. local time, central time this morning and she will be serving her supervised release in wisconsin, ana. jesse kirsch, thank you

she will now serve the remainder of her sentence under supervised release. joining us is nbc correspondent jesse kirsch jesse, why this earlier release and what are you hearing from daunte wright s family just to rewind and remind people of what unfolded here she was sentenced to two years by a judge in 2022, sentenced to two years by a judge prosecutors wanted much more they wanted around seven years the family felt that this fell far short. however, in minnesota, the way the rules are set up, according to the state when they put out a release today, people serve two-thirds of a sentence in prison the last third is always served on what s called supervised release. they don t have a parole board people don t get off early for good behavior. that s a term we talk about in some instances whatever she was sentenced to, she was only going to be serving two-thirds of that again, the judge sentenced her to two years prosecutors and the family wanted far more. here is part of the reaction
