Today the committee will hear from witnesses about the challenges that state stanksed businesses in the cannabis owners have when attempting to under the controlled substance act, its considered a schedule one drug. Being categorized as a schedule one means that the possession, distribution or sale of marijuana or other marijuana derived products is illegal under federal law and any proceeds from cannabis related activities remain subject to antiMoney Laundering laws. In the last several years many states have used valid initiatives or referendums that have legalized marijuana in some form, whether for recreational or medical use. Currently there are 11 states plus the district of columbia where it is legal to buy and consume recreational and medical marijuana adds well. And there are 22 states plus d. C. Unwavering commitment to make sure that the special counsel cannot be fired, that this investigation cannot be a victim of political interference. The president has indicated that he is averse to hearing about russia or considering its threat to this country. That aversion certainly sets back his ability to defend this country against the russian threat through sanctions and other means and deterrence that will assure that russia is made to pay a price so they do not do it again. In conclusion, let me just say that aversion must be overcome. We need to send a signal, as we did by passing sanctions, that we will take action against russia to stop it from interfering again in this election, that we will make sure that russia is made to pay a price, and that our constituents know that we will insist on a fair and independent investigation without political interference, passing legislation that is bipartisan. I came of age during the nixon years and have vivid memories of the 1968 Republican National convention watched on a black and white tv late into the night breathlessly hoping for his nomination. We have come to learn more about Richard Nixon and that marquis left on our country and world and as i look at the state of our nation in the world today i reach into the archives of the 72 campaign, nixon now more than ever. We have had the opportunity two meet wonderful people through the library tran and betsy hewitt among them. Hugh is a frequent figure at library interviewing Authors Panel discussions, participating in debates and as we saw today conducting his nationally syndicated radio show. He served in the Nixon Administration as a speechwriter and was critical in the construction of this facility and for that a debt of gratitude by all who have benefited from it.
