Assitant Sub-Inspector Dinesh Shetty, who was part of the encounter team and missed the bullets by a few inches, recalled, “It was God’s grace that I escaped Mehraj’s shots that day.” ACP Sakri had taken charge on November 26, last year and was determined to curb rowdy elements in his sub-division. The two names that topped the list were Mehraj (28) and Abrar (31), who had over 40 cases registered against them, mostly of robberies, murders, rape, kidnap, housebreak, etc. Mehraj was even convicted for four years by a court in Tumkur but remained untraceable.
