Key West City Manager Veliz accepts FKAA post


Key West City Manager Greg Veliz may not be in that role much longer, as he has agreed to take a senior administrative position with the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority.
On Friday, the FKAA board voted unanimously in its selection of Veliz for the deputy director position at the FKAA. He was among 49 people who applied from around the country and Canada.
“Of the 49 candidates, he was absolutely the best choice, and he will be the best fit,” FKAA board member Cara Higgins said.
Upon being chosen, Veliz told the board he would accept the position, Higgins said. His contract with the city requires him to give the city a 90-day notice, he told the board. ....

Bahama Village panel calls for bids on 3.2-acre parcel development


The Bahama Village Redevelopment Advisory Committee withstood a full-court press from city officials Thursday to green-light the selection of a local non-profit housing group to develop a 3.2-acre parcel without competitive bidding.
Instead, BVRAC members voted 5-1 to recommend the city put out a formal request for contractor bids to develop the 3.2-acre parcel in Bahama Village as affordable workforce housing. City officials had asked BVRAC to approve local non-profit service agency AH of Monroe, Inc., as project developer on what is likely to be a multimillion-dollar project without going through the usual RFP process.
The city charter allows it to bypass the normal RFP process for reasons “in the best interest of the city.” ....
