Freundel fired up

Former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is cautioning Barbadians against getting too carried away with the “truce” that was brokered last Thursday in Chapman Lane, The City, unless the parties involved are also going to be turning in weapons. “Phase 2 would have to be that the Attorney General and Minister are going to lead them on a day appointed to Central Police Station to hand over their firearms. Because if … ....

DLP challenges administration on record of economic growth, crime reduction

President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Dr Ronnie Yearwood has labelled the Mia Mottley-led administration as “incompetent”, having failed at growing the economy, improving the island’s tourism product and tackling crime. In his first press conference for 2023, Dr Yearwood said the Government had been especially dismal in its handling of the economy which had seen only “negligible” growth. He accused the Barbados Labour Party administration of going on a “borrowing spree” since coming into office in 2018, with little to show for it.Dr Yearwood also highlighted an absence of any growth policies as evidence of Government’s failure.“The Barbados economy has struggled for growth under the Mia Mottley and the BLP administration. This is obviously due to the ravages of COVID-19, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that, but really, it has also been due really to the austerity measures imposed by the administration. ....

#BTEditorial - DLP ought to name a full shadow Cabinet

The past few days were intriguing, to say the least. First, we heard that a Cabinet decision was made to replace Independence Day with Barbados National Day.After a huge uproar on social media, the call-in programmes and elsewhere, the day after we heard that the decision would be carried back to Cabinet. Today, we were told Cabinet reversed the decision and Independence Day, as we know it, remains, for now.Amusing, though, is that Government spokesman Wilfred Abrahams said: “I am a member of the Government that listens and as we have done in the past we have listened to the voice of the people.”If that were totally true there would have been a forum for the  people to speak and maybe vote on becoming a Republic and on which day to celebrate that occasion. Both of those decisions were made without the input of the people. But there were two things that happened that were heartening for democracy. ....

GSC ease needed - economist - Barbados Today

In light of Government registering a primary surplus of $255.5 million for the first three months of the fiscal year, which started in April, Kemar Stuart is again calling on government to provide an ease to Barbadians in the Garbage and Sewage Contribution (GSC) levy.At the same time, he believes Government could do more in the area of capital investment to help spur economic growth.Reacting to the latest economic review by the Central Bank earlier this week, he said “What’s clear is that the Barbados economy has been producing record level earnings for the government. The recording of a primary surplus of $255 million indicates the availability of excess funds [and] this is adequate financial resources to grant at least a six-month reduction to the garbage and sewage tax to reduce pressure on the local front,” said Stuart. ....
