Do more to ease taxpayers, urges Walters

As residents continue to complain bitterly about the rising cost of living, Democratic Labour Party (DLP) member Ryan Walters is urging the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) government to provide them with an ease in taxes.Suggesting that government can do a lot more to “cushion” residents from the rising cost of living, Walters pointed to several revenue-raising measures that were implemented over the past four years, which he recommended the Government should review. He said while he acknowledged that the Mia Mottley administration has being making some “attempts to cushion the average man”, he believed a lot more could be done since the rising costs were not only as a result of global occurrences.

GSC ease needed - economist - Barbados Today

In light of Government registering a primary surplus of $255.5 million for the first three months of the fiscal year, which started in April, Kemar Stuart is again calling on government to provide an ease to Barbadians in the Garbage and Sewage Contribution (GSC) levy.At the same time, he believes Government could do more in the area of capital investment to help spur economic growth.Reacting to the latest economic review by the Central Bank earlier this week, he said “What’s clear is that the Barbados economy has been producing record level earnings for the government. The recording of a primary surplus of $255 million indicates the availability of excess funds [and] this is adequate financial resources to grant at least a six-month reduction to the garbage and sewage tax to reduce pressure on the local front,” said Stuart.

Measures should have included a reduction in GSC - Stuart

A cut in the Garbage and Sewage Contribution (GSC) levy for households should have been one of the measures announced by Prime Minister Mia Mottley on Thursday to help Barbadians better cope with the cost of living, says economist Kemar Stuart.“In the recent address to the nation the Prime Minister missed the opportunity to address the Garbage and Sewage tax currently attached to the water bill of all Barbadians, both domestic households and commercial properties,” said Stuart.“This tax has been a serious burden to Barbadians, especially those persons not connected to the sewage system,” he said. After days of intense negotiation with members of the business community, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced a major relief package on Thursday, placing an additional 44 food, household and personal items on the VAT-free list starting next Thursday for six months.
