For Craig Press Though there are many deserving young men and women who have made a name for themselves in Moffat County High School’s sports venues and classrooms, there can be only two seniors who end their four years by picking up the top honors as part of the annual Lewis “Dude” Dent Memorial Award ceremony. The yearly celebration of high school students excelling in academics and athletics alike took place Monday evening at the Center of Craig, with a full banquet, speeches, trophies and more to acknowledge multi-talented teens. The namesake of the Dude Dent award was a storied football, basketball and track athlete at Craig High School who graduated in 1939 and promptly went to the next level of sports success by achieving All-Conference honors in the Big 7 at Colorado A&M now Colorado State University and later named the best all-around athlete in the Mountain States Conference. ....
For the Craig Press On May 17, Moffat County High School acknowledges some of its best and brightest student-athletes for the Class of 2021 with the Lewis “Dude” Dent Memorial Award ceremony. The namesake of the top accolade for sporty students is Lewis Dent, a 1939 Craig High School graduate well known for his proficiency in multiple sports, including football, basketball and track. An athlete at Colorado State University then Colorado A&M he went on to enlist in the United States’ military effort in World War II, and was killed in action in 1944. An award bearing Dent’s name has been part of MCHS sports since 1957, later followed by Outstanding Female Athlete in 1977, both celebrating well-rounded pupils who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and in athletic competition. ....
For the Craig Press The Craig Kiwanis Club provided more than $15,000 in scholarship funds this week to Moffat County High School students. Andy Bockelman / for the Craig Press Despite a year of many changes locally and nationally, Craig Kiwanis Club went the distance to fulfill its mission of supporting area students. And, that’s even without the group’s biggest fundraiser. The local branch of the service organization provided more than $15,000 in scholarship funds this week to Moffat County High School students. Kiwanis’s usual big draw for money is ticket sales for its annual March play, a satire of current events. However, this year the show could not go on due to concerns about a public gathering amid the coronavirus pandemic. ....
With a weekend full of state tournament competitions, Moffat County High School sent its student-athletes off in style Thursday with a district-wide celebration. The Moffat County girls’ basketball team hit the road for a round of 16 matchup against Delta Thursday night. Bulldog swimmers Ellina Jones, Alexa Neton, Kelsey McDiffett and Hailey Knowles were also honored before heading off to Thornton for the 3A state swimming championships, and Moffat County wrestlers Blake Juergens, Kaden Hixon, Pepper Rhyne and Blake Hill hit the road to Pueblo for the state wrestling championships. The school made an announcement shortly before the event started as the three teams made their way from the third floor down to outside of the school, walking through the hallways getting salutations and cheers from the waiting students and teachers. ....
A handful of Moffat County swimmers clocked personal bests at the 3A Regional meet in what was one of the best meets of the season for the Bulldogs, which also saw the 400-yard free relay team clinch a state tournament spot. The state-qualifying 400-yard free relay team of seniors Ellina Jones, Alexa Neton and Kelsey McDiffett, and junior Hailey Knowles will head to Thornton to swim at the Veteran’s Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) for the 3A State Meet on March 13th. At regionals on Saturday, the 400 Free relay dropped over seven seconds for a finishing time 4:09:85. The Bulldogs’ best individual performance was from Jones in the 100 yard backstroke, as she finished in eighth place, with a time of 1:11.80, good for a personal best time for the senior. ....
