PowerCell rolls out industrialized fuel cell module for marine segment

PowerCell rolls out industrialized fuel cell module for marine segment May 24, 2021, by Naida Hakirevic Fuel cell developer PowerCell Sweden has presented an industrialized high-power fuel cell module especially developed for the electrification of marine applications. As explained, the module is built on several fuel cell systems that have been integrated into a single unit. Each module has a power of 200 kW but can easily be connected in parallel to achieve power in the megawatt range. Against the background of more stringent emission regulations for the marine vessels, the marine segment is facing a transition to new drive systems and fuels. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), has mandated that emissions from commercial marine vessels should be cut by 50 percent by 2050, and in addition to that, there are several national initiatives, such as the upcoming more stringent emission requirements for marine vessels travelli

Danish Shipping: Fleet-based CO2 compliance is a shorter way for green transition

Danish Shipping: Fleet-based CO2 compliance is a shorter way for green transition May 6, 2021, by Naida Hakirevic The path to lower CO2 emissions from ships could be shorter by choosing a fleet-based approach to efficiency requirements, a new analysis prepared for Danish Shipping by CE Delft shows. If new low- and zero-emission ships are to enter into operation and more expensive climate-neutral fuels are to gain acceptance by the end of this decade, CO2 regulation should be possible on the basis of a shipping company’s fleet and not of an individual ship. Specifically, instead of requiring that all ships of a company meet the required carbon intensity indicator (CII) individually, companies could opt to comply by demonstrating that their fleet (or a number of their ships) does not emit more than it would if all ships would meet the required CII.
