Uptown Lexington Inc. Executive Director Jacob Gordon has a vision for the uptown area and that vision does not include trash.
Uptown Lexington used Earth Day Thursday to assemble a team of 50 environmentally-minded residents and business owners to pick up 12-14, large bags of trash from the streets of downtown Lexington between 10 a.m. and noon. One person found pants. Another found a dollar bill. Cigarette butts were the most plentiful item picked up over and over. That s a problem, he said of the massive amount of cigarette butts discarded by people in the downtown area.
Several of the volunteers hung around to help plant the first of three Chinese Lace Bark Elm trees Uptown Lexington purchased to help beautify Lexington. Two of the trees were planted on the Square in front of the war monuments and another on the Square where Sturgill Engineering is located across from the Old Davidson County Court House.
