Take the Winding Highway to Hana

Take the Winding Highway to Hana
Just as the queasiness in my stomach from the continuous onslaught of curves and cutbacks along the narrow uphill road began to subside, we rounded yet another 180-degree bend. The first waterfall with whipped-cream waters dripping down deep-creviced cleavages appeared by the roadside, its beauty washing away all my remaining reservations. It was the first of many such waterfalls we were to encounter.
Such is the road to Hana, which traverses the northern coast of Maui in Hawaii, from the rustic village of Paia to its destination at the eastern tip. While only 52 miles long, this series of twists, turns, dips and dives can take up to three hours to negotiate. But the ever-present views of lush greenery and ocean blues, vistas of rock and white water foaming up over the shores, and waterfalls bubbling over craggy cliffs are well worth the daylong adventure. ....

Calling the people of Maui County “our greatest strength” over a year of health and economic challenges, Mayor Michael Victorino highlighted the organizations who stepped up to help and the community leaders definining the “new normal” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Victorino delivered his virtual State of the County address Tuesday night in a prerecorded message from Maui Preparatory Academy’s new Bozich Center, a marked contrast from the speech given in February last year when he spoke to an unmasked crowd at an indoor gym. ....

Mar 8, 2021
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for areas of Haiku and Pauwela downstream of the Kaupakalua Dam.
Maui County warned that residents evacuating their homes due to flooding in the Haiku area should not return until it is safe.
Residents have been stranded after heavy rains and flash flooding crested the Kaupakalua Reservoir and Dam and Haiku, sending fast-flowing floodwaters across roads and heavily damaging or destroying half a dozen homes, the county said.

Let's not waste this crisis | News, Sports, Jobs

MICHAEL VICTORINO
As World War II was finally winding down, Sir Winston Churchill famously said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”
When coronavirus arrived here almost a year ago, the pandemic dictated what we could not do. Yet, Maui County turned its attention to what we could do. And together we did plenty.
From Day One, our top priority has been public health and well-being. That meant helping individuals, families and small businesses cope with the pandemic’s sudden financial damage. Even before the $2.2 trillion CARES Act passed on March 25, we were actively planning.
With help from the Maui Food Bank, churches, nonprofits, social service agencies, small businesses, farms, ranchers and countless volunteers, together we distributed nearly 8 million pounds of food to Maui Nui residents during 2020. We shored up nonprofit agencies that care for children, the sick, elderly and homeless. With our partner, Maui Economic Opportunity, we distributed $9.5 m ....

Strong winds lift roof clear off Palolo-area home
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - More windy conditions and widespread rain are expected on Tuesday as a cold front remains parked over the Hawaiian Island chain.
On Monday, strong winds and heavy rains buffeted the state, bringing down trees and utility lines, knocking out power in places, and leaving behind a big mess.
Monday night, Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino urged residents to stay home and off the roads after a landslide blocked a portion of Honoapiilani Highway. Officials said washing machine-sized boulders fell onto the road near mile marker 35, blocking both lanes of traffic, MPD reported before 7 p.m. ....
