Editorial — Five decades of progress: Earth Day has helped us focus on resolving pollution issues


Environmental activism has a long history in our country.
But Earth Day, an annual event first held 51 years ago today, became a landmark moment. Ecological conservation finally found its way into the public consciousness, and there was no turning back.
Northern New York is blessed to have people and organizations dedicated to preserving the natural resources here. The Save the River group in Clayton was formed in 1978; the Thousand Islands Land Trust in Clayton began in 1985; the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust in Watertown was founded in 1991; and the Indian River Lakes Conservancy in Redwood was created in 1998.
Earth Day has been commemorated each year since. People have gathered together to express themselves on environmental issues, and cleanup projects have been organized. ....

South Lewis elementary school buildings are up for grabs — for just the right fit


TURIN — With a number of dollars and just the right dream, you, too, could own an elementary school in Lewis County.
The soon-to-be former Port Leyden and Glenfield elementary schools are now listed for sale with Good Morning Realty’s commercial division for $150,000 and $300,000, respectively.
At the end of this school year, the two schools will be decommissioned as determined by South Lewis Central School District voters when they approved the two closures in order to consolidate all schools onto the South Lewis campus in Turin. To do so, a $39 million capital project to build a new elementary school was approved by 130 votes, 732-602, in early November 2018, after a number of previous attempts at consolidation were voted down over the years. ....

ANCA board adds real estate risk manager David Heidecorn | News, Sports, Jobs

SARANAC LAKE The Adirondack North Country Association has announced the addition of David Heidecorn to its 25-member board of directors.
Heidecorn is a senior advisor to L. Catterton Real Estate, a Luxembourg-based wing of the L. Catterton global investment firm based in Connecticut. He lives in Westchester County and spends time at his new home in Lake Placid.
“In my mind, David’s involvement reinforces the value of having skilled, thoughtful people who bring diverse perspectives to our board,” ANCA Executive Director Kate Fish said in a press release.
Heidecorn was elected by the ANCA board at its quarterly meeting in December 2020. He joins the economic development nonprofit group, based in Saranac Lake, as it tackles issues such as the economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, local food system resilience, a transition to a clean energy economy, and the creation and retention of new and existing businesses in the r ....
