LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - It’s a call no parent wants to receive but is one that came for a Laurel man — his daughter had died.
Jan. 31 is a day Wesley and Kathy Byrd will never forget.
“Around noon, my brother came into the room, woke me up. He asked me to sit up and he told me, he said, you know, ‘Rhiannon’s dead,’” said Wesley Byrd, father of Rhiannon Byrd. “And I mean I fell apart.” ....

South Bend women thrilled to see sorority sister Kamala Harris inaugurated as vice president


SOUTH BEND — Breanna Allen has wanted to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority for as long as she could remember.
Allen remembers being a child looking up to her aunt and her sorority sisters. And now Allen, who attended Indiana State University just like her aunt, is president of the South Bend chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
That experience of having her aunt as a role model is one reason Allen will watch with excitement as one of her sorority sisters, Kamala Harris, is sworn in as vice president Wednesday. Harris will make history as the first woman, the first African-American woman and first person of Asian descent to ascend to that position. ....

Ruby Kathleen West, known as “Katy” by everybody that knew her, went home to be with the Lord the morning of Tuesday, December 15, 2020 as the result of a heart attack. She was born December 29, 1940 and would have turned 80 on December 29 of this year. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roggie West and Maude (Richardson) West; her husband, Charles Lee West, Jr.; her son, Jeffrey West; and twin sons, Larry and Gary West.
Katy was a life-long resident of Williamsburg, KY. She retired from the United States Post Office in 2002 where she worked for over 28 years. She later went back to work for Maiden Drug Store in June of 2005 and retired for a second time in March 2019. She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in her younger years and later was a member of Main Street Baptist Church for over 50 years. She dearly loved her Sunday School Class and had a friendship and bond with all the ladies in there. ....
