seven adjacent terminals and is the fifth busiest container port in the united states. it stretches south from the bay bridge to jack london square. we have live team coverage tonight, ktvu s debra villalon has been talking to truckers and protesters. we start with ken wayne and the demonstrators next move. reporter: we spent most of the night down in berth 55 where a large group of protesters are blocking the way there. 200 protesters broke off of that group and are now gathering outside the lpa gate blocking this gate and they say they plan to be here all night long. reporter: the occupy protest took on a bit of a carnal atmosphere carnival atmosphere with music and dancing. one man wearing a national rifle association hat said it s a protest for freedom. the issues i think are inequality and lack of rerepresentation for the rights of the citizens in our government. reporter: some tents were set up right in the street with some preparing for the possibility ....

people here and all of the energy here. reporter: and right now they have been going for about an hour. this is the second demonstration of the day. one truck at a time, protestors are determined to shut down the port of oakland. in part, their strategy is to try and convince the workers here that the demonstrators are on their side the side of the 99%, the working man. we want you to get paid tomorrow. we are doing this for you as well. well, i don t know. they ain t doing it for me because i don t see nothing out of it. i m losing work, so if anything, they are hurting us more than helping us. because now we re a day behind in getting what we need to get accomplished to get home. reporter: she blocked the entrances of certainly port berths. and through the morning there were sporadic rallies and longshoremen got sent home after they tried to cos lines of demonstrators and police. police arrested a couple of demonstrators but the protests were overwhe ....

police arrested a couple of demonstrators but the protests were overwhelmingly peaceful. and frustrated for truckers who had spent the day waiting to see if this next wave of demonstrations would also block their ache is. the way things are now, i mean it is hard to make a buck. and they are making it hard. but obviously they don t care. you know, i mean they said they are doing it for you, making a point to the corporations. well they should get together with these people and if these people would come and talk to them, maybe things would be different. but this is not the way to go about it. reporter: so i mentioned this morning that some 200 longshoremen were called in to work but three quarters had to go home. 200 is about the number they get for a shift. and now we re hearing for the overnight shift a different situation, no longshoremen were called in. and that doesn t mean the port of oakland is shut down according to port officials, but it does mean the ....
