The continued house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the religious leader of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir, has been criticised by the Hurriyat Conference and Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jama Masjid in Srinagar. The groups claimed that the detention infringed on the religious sentiments of Muslims and Prime Minister Modis speech on democracy. Mirwaiz has been under house arrest for more than two years and has been prevented from delivering sermons during congregations and on consecutive Fridays.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday urged party workers to support the upcoming annual Amaranth Yatra and serve the yatris, calling the pilgrimage a "golden chance" to remind the country of Kashmiriyat. The former CM also appealed to the government not to cause any inconvenience to the local population as they help the yatris.
Former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti and Farooq Abdullah, have said that the Hindu-Muslim brotherhood during Amarnath Yatra is a reflection of Kashmiriyat and a lesson for those spreading hatred in the name of religion across the country.
