The continued house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the religious leader of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir, has been criticised by the Hurriyat Conference and Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jama Masjid in Srinagar. The groups claimed that the detention infringed on the religious sentiments of Muslims and Prime Minister Modis speech on democracy. Mirwaiz has been under house arrest for more than two years and has been prevented from delivering sermons during congregations and on consecutive Fridays.
