Ducks Unlimited gives update on Upper Cache wetlands restoration plan

DAWSON CREEK, B.C – Ducks Unlimited expanded on its plans to restore wetlands in Upper Cache Thursday, with provincial biologist Bruce Harrison presenting a package of information to the Peace River Regional District.
Three small earth dams are proposed on an existing ditch system on private farmland near Highway 29 and Szoo Road, just west of the Attachie lookout and rest stop. While the plan remains unendorsed by directors, the project is planned to offset the loss of wetlands to the Site C reservoir.
“This was once a natural area, very similar to Watson Slough. Over the years it was drained so it makes sense to do a project here,” Harrison said. ....

PRRD board approves Rose Prairie water station closure

DAWSON CREEK, B.C – The Rose Prairie water station is officially closed after approval from the Peace River Regional District board.
The decision was made at the March 11th meeting after a recommendation from the Electoral Area Directors Committee. Explosive gas levels were detected in the air within the treatment storage tank and the station’s well casing on February 21st, the day before opening.
There was no trace of gas detected before the last check-up before the opening date, and believe the water chemistry changed after February 19th. The source water is from a well contained in a small pump house, 1.4 km from the bulk tankloader. ....

PRRD commitee recommends closure of Rose Prairie Water Station

ROSE PRAIRIE, B.C – The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) Electoral Area Directors Committee is recommending that the PRRD Regional Board authorize closure and ceasing of operations of the Rose Prairie potable water bulk fill station at its upcoming March 11th meeting.
Kari Bondaroff, Environmental Services Manager, requested the committee make the recommendation in a March 4th report.
The water station, located in Electoral Area B, had been scheduled to open on February 21st. Prior to the opening, explosive levels of gas were detected in the air within the treatment storage tank and the well casing. The opening was cancelled and further testing during the following week revealed continued levels of gas within the casing. Low levels of oxygen were detected at the floor and ceiling areas of the pump house. ....

New MOU for North Peace Rural Roads Coalition

TAYLOR, B.C – The District of Taylor is taking the wheel on the North Peace Rural Roads Taskforce, drafting a memorandum of understanding for a new coalition.
The taskforce was dissolved in January after the 2020 contract was completed.
Taylor Mayor Rob Fraser the municipality is prepared to host a new contract during PRRD’s Feb. 11 board meeting.
The MOU outlines a coalition between Taylor, Electoral Area B, and Hudson’s Hope, and has been renamed as such, replacing the taskforce.
“Our council wanted to make sure there was a commitment by all of the potential participants, and so this MOU was drafted to pull together an agreement between us that would allow this to go forward,” said Fraser. “We’re hoping the regional board will endorse this MOU so we can proceed forward with this rural roads taskforce.” ....
