Shippers find it tough to win back buyers as Centre resorts to ad hoc moves to stop shipments
Iraq and Turkey are providing tough competition to India in the latter’s traditional onion export market, particularly with the Union Government taking ad hoc decisions to ban shipments over the last few years.
“Iraq and Turkey are waiting to fill in any gap left by India in the onion export market. They gained when India banned onion exports from September 24 to December 31 last year,” said Agri Commodities Exporters Association (ACEA) President M Madan Prakash. ....

Now, growers flock to store their onion to cash in during lean arrivals season

Prices drop below ₹900/quintal; export demand yet to pick up
Onion growers in Maharashtra have booked warehouses and storages well in advance this year to store the bulb even as its prices have slipped further to below ₹900 a quintal.
“Onion prices have dropped sharply from the highs seen in February. Rabi onions are expected to arrive from April 15 onwards. By now itself, onion farmers have booked spaces in warehouses to store the bulb,” said Agri Commodities Exporters Association (ACEA) President M Madan Prakash.
Onion prices, which had zoomed to ₹4,000 a quintal in the third week of February this year, have nosedived to below ₹900. According to Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare data, modal price of red onion, usually harvested during early and late Kharif season, is currently ₹850/quintal at Lasalgaon, Asia’s largest market for the bulb ....

Chandigarh (Haryana) [India], April 3 (ANI): Within just two days of the commencement of Rabi procurement, the Haryana government procured 2.5 lakh quintals of wheat brought by 3,574 farmers to the procurement centres, at Minimum Support Price (MSP).
The procurement of the Rabi crop started on April 1, 2021.
Divulging more details in this regard, an official spokesperson said, For the convenience of farmers, the registration on the Meri Fasal Mera Byora portal has reopened from today. Those farmers who due to any reason could not register earlier should register their crop on the portal soon. ....

Commencement of rabi procurement is just a week away (expected April 10), but no end is in sight to the stand-off between the Centre and the Punjab government over direct payments for the foodgrains procured. Ironically, nobody, including farmers who are ostensibly the beneficiaries of the direct money transfer, is happy with the move.
The Ministry of Consumer Affair, Food and Public Distribution had informed the Punjab government that DBT to farmers is mandatory for the coming rabi wheat procurement season. However, the State has refused to implement it, and has sought appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the issue and defer the scheme for at least one year. ....
