They would be released on bail for the second, third, fourth and fifth and tried another year later and given probation again too often. This was driving the crime rate. We achieved a lot. Thats why i was willing to support with and support senator durbin committed to reduce the mandatory census. I think we can be smarter about it. I dont have any doubt we can be smarter about it. It would be naive and a big air if we were to think we can just walk away from incarcerating dangerous people. You were worried for your guards. A lot of the people are just dangerous and weve just got to be real careful about that. I think we need to watch the cost. The federal prison system cant be the greatest system, most expensive in the whole world, which is. We just cant. Weve got to watch, look for ways to reduce costs. And weve got to be cautious about adopting the belief that theres been some new Recidivism Program thats going to solve the ....
I would say for this discussion that there are no differences, but we do not have specific programs specifically targeted for the female inmate population, which this would be consistent with all of corrections, not just within the federal system, but i would definitely take your question back to have discussions internally with the bureau to include my colleagues and if theres something that is being done or if you are aware of something specifically for the female inmate population relative to the cbt programs we provide. My understanding, as a general proposistion, women are in prison for drug crimes and not Violent Crimes. That is a very different profile than a dangerous felon in our system. I would ask that you take into consideration those kinds of factors as well as i think there may be some programs that will better enable women to reintegrate when they are released and would work for men. I believe that there are some st ....
More. [inaudible] [applause] up next on book tv, after words with debbie hines creator of legal speaks blog. This week, abbe contributing authors to how can you represent those people, the director and supervisor of Georgetown Law School criminal defense and prisoner advocacy clinic discuss the Defense Attorneys answers to the professional question the year asked most often how they are able to defend those that commit the worst crimes. The program is about an hour. I am so glad to be doubled to interview you on your book how can you represent those people. It was a very interesting and thoughtprovoking book and i dont say that lightly because if it werent i wouldnt say otherwise but it was definitely a lot of emotion and ander and sadness and laughter. It basically ran the whole gamut. Why dont you start by telling us how you came up with the book. We are delighted ....
The man is enjoying his life. Lets not wreck it. Laugh so. Last question. Thank you for your time tonight. My question is regarding an article that Daniel Hemminger wrote for the journal. Maybe a month ago and he basically said that the strategy that republican should employ is to not attack obamacare and it would eventually fall under its own weight. This seems more realistic today than it did then and i was curious what you thought about that and personally i am skeptical because ive never seen entitlement taken away. He made that argument so i dont know if you are familiar with him but i thought you might have an opinion. Actually i concur with him. Entitlement to be taken away has to be instituted and it has to have some success in being implanted. This could be a very rocky entrance and a bombmaking or may not survive. Its not definitive and its more likely than not that it will collapse of its own weight. That has been wha ....
Of the expanded use of deadly force. We have a large audience in the room today. At the outset, i want to note the senate rules prohibit any signs of ap to brace which would include outbursts, clapping or demonstrations. If theres someone who wishes to be witness to this hearing and cant attend in this room, there is another room available, room 226 in the dirksen building. Ill provide opening remarks and then giving senator cruz an opportunity before we turn to our witnesses. The debate over stand your ground laws raises fundamental questions about selfdefense in the be United States of america. In recent years weve seen a dramatic increase in laws expanding the situation in which a person can legally use deadly force in response to a perceived threat. Florida passed the first of this new wave of stand your ground laws in 2005. Prior to 2005, florida law held that a person outside his home could not use deadly force and then claim ....
