Founder of warehouse where 36 people died in blaze pleads guilty
OAKLAND It’s been more than four years since a fire raged through an East Oakland warehouse known as the Ghost Ship, taking with it the lives of 36 people and for some time since, the families of those victims waited to hear specific words from the master tenant: guilty.
Derick Almena, 50, pleaded guilty Friday to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of three dozen who perished in the Dec. 2, 2016, warehouse fire as part of a plea deal. He is expected to be sentenced to 12 years in jail, but because of jail time already served and credit for good behavior, Almena likely won’t return to Santa Rita Jail. He is likely to continue to be monitored by ankle monitor in his Lake County home another 1 1/2 years and be subject to three years of supervise ....
