Athol Daily News - H S Notebook: Mahar has a flare for the dramatic, Turners might be ahead of schedule

Modified: 2/15/2021 8:42:11 PM Through its first five games of the season, the Mahar boys basketball team has had its fair share of close finishes. Two of those contests involving game-winning shots in the final 15 seconds. Against Pioneer on Feb. 3, the Senators found themselves tied at 52 in the game’s final minute. They put the ball in the hands of Jake Tenney, who darted into the paint and dished out to a wide-open Matt Lyesiuk, who buried the go-ahead 3 with 12 seconds left. Mahar got a stop on the other end of the court to earn a 55-52 victory. Wednesday against Frontier, the Senators found themselves in nearly the same situation. The game was tied at 48, and they had the ball with under a minute to play. The shot clock was still turned on, not allowing for a true buzzer-beater.

Athol Daily News - Greenfield hockey routs Southwick, 9-2

Greenfield hockey routs Southwick, 9-2 Modified: 2/10/2021 10:33:33 PM Midway through the second period Wednesday night, it appeared the Greenfield hockey team was headed for a nail-biter with Southwick. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period, the lone Green Wave goal coming from Jacob Bryant off a dish from Aidan Roche. Shane Prusak’s goal early in the second period was answered by a Ram goal midway through the second period, evening the scoring at two apiece. That’s when the Greenfield offense came to life. The Wave tallied three goals in the closing half of the second period before lighting the scoreboard up four times in the third frame to come away with a 9-2 lopsided victory at Amelia Park Ice Arena in Westfield.
