Suffolk DA: Former NYPD Officer Sentenced to Prison for Selling Fentanyl, Causing Fatal Overdose

Sini has announced the sentencing of a former NYPD officer to prison for selling fentanyl and causing a fatal overdose in 2019. “The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is aggressively investigating and prosecuting drug dealers, particularly those who are causing overdoses, and Joseph Recca is the latest example,” District Attorney Sini said. “Today, my Office and the Court held him responsible for the death he caused. What makes his case unique and particularly troubling is the fact that he was selling drugs while also serving as a police officer. We will not tolerate drug dealers peddling poison in our communities, and our message today is that no one is above the law.”

Joseph Recca of West Islip pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and second-degree conspiracy in the death of Ryan Bornschein. Suffolk District Attorney Timothy Sini has also called on the state to pass legislation to increase penalties for certain drug dealers. “The state Legislature and the governor need to sign into law a death by dealer statute. We need to send a message out that when you sell drugs and you kill people, you are held responsible for that death, Sini said.
