Vivienne Westwood marks her 80th birthday with a message to the world

Dame Vivienne Westwood, the formerly flame-haired fashion icon who helped bring punk to the global stage and toppled Naomi Campbell on a catwalk by putting her in a pair of ten-inch heels, today celebrates her 80th birthday.
Westwood, true to her punk roots, has dedicated as much time to creating edgy, sustainability focused fashion collections in recent years as she has to fighting climate change and warning of the impending “environmental catastrophe”.
Tonight, therefore, instead of having a nice celebratory tea party as most newly crowned octogenarians might, Westwood has teamed up with arts group Circa to create a ten-minute long film, which will be shown on the screens at Piccadilly Circus at 20:21 BST (British Summer Time). ....

This isn’t the first poem Smith has dedicated to Thunberg. In January last year, the artist wrote a piece specifically for the activist’s birthday, which began:
“This is / Greta Thunberg, turning / seventeen today, asking / for no accolate, no gifts, / save we not be neutral.”
Smith’s new work is created as part of her month-long residency with digital art platform Circa. On New Year’s Eve, the artist staged a 15-minute performance, which was streamed live via Circa’s YouTube channel. The show also saw Smith share a NYE message and pay tribute to NHS and healthcare workers. ....

The punk icon s New Year s Eve show, streaming around the world on YouTube s digital art platform Circa, will be beamed onto billboards in the heart of London.
During the 15-minute showcase, Smith plans to pay tribute to healthcare workers who have lost their lives due to Covid-19 in 2020, and she will also read a new poem dedicated to teenage environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg.
Some of the work (for the show) I did in my bedroom, some in a recording studio and some at my desk, Patti tells The Guardian. I had to teach myself how to use Photo Booth on my computer and film myself reading a poem. I’m sure there are 14 year olds who can do this in five minutes but it took me quite a while. But I got there and I’m so proud of myself. ....
